Electronics Policy

At Nysmith, we strive to ensure school is a place where students can focus on learning, building friendships, and developing confidence.

Student Expectations

  • Preschool–3rd graders should leave electronic devices (including smartwatches) at home.

  • All connected electronic devices (cell phones, iPads, smart watches, etc.) must be turned off and stored in lockers or backpacks upon arrival.

  • Students may check devices at dismissal before heading home.

  • Students staying for aftercare or clubs may use devices once dismissed from those programs.

  • There is no exception on indoor recess days; devices must remain put away until the end of the day.

  • If a child is unwilling to comply, they will not be permitted to have an electronic device at school.

Enforcement Procedures

  • First infraction: Student is asked to put the device away; an administrator is notified.

  • Second infraction: Device is brought to the front office; parents are called to pick it up; a conversation with Brian will take place.

  • Third infraction: Parents are contacted; student may no longer bring an electronic device to school.

If Communication Is Needed During the Day

  • Parents should call the main office; staff will bring the child to the phone or relay a message.

  • Students who need to reach a parent may use the office phone, or may use a personal device in the presence of a teacher, administrator, or staff member.

Personal Laptops

Personal laptops may be used for schoolwork if the student follows expectations. If the policy is not followed, the privilege of bringing a laptop from home will be revoked.

Additional Notes

  • Families are encouraged to label all electronics.

  • Nysmith is not responsible for lost or stolen devices.

  • We encourage parents to check in on children’s online activity regularly and reinforce respectful digital citizenship.

Videotaping on Campus

To respect the privacy of students and staff, video recording is not permitted on school grounds except during public events such as plays, concerts, and open-house programs.

Videos taken at school may not be shared on social media.

Please note that the school may record common areas for security purposes. These recordings are confidential and used solely to protect our community.
